Dear members and friends of SCAN,

Dr Fitri Suraya Mohamad, President of SCAN Kuching

It is a privilege to take on the presidency of SCAN, and I thank our 3rd president, Ms Emmy Marina, and the past and current committee for the foundations they built: a helpline staffed by survivors and caregivers, a patient guidebook in several languages, rural breast-cancer outreach recognised by the UICC, and the Walk With Me series, which has drawn more than 3,000 supporters since 2018.

The next two years are a turning point for cancer care in Sarawak. The Sarawak Cancer Centre is moving from design to construction. Patients’ voices should shape how it serves families from Kapit, Miri and the longhouses as well as from Kuching. SCAN intends to be that voice.

Our plan for 2027–2028 has three simple aims. First, more members, each with a real role — every committee portfolio will have a deputy drawn from you. Second, trained advocates: our new Advocate Academy will help survivors and caregivers turn their experience into change. Third, a presence beyond Kuching, starting with a group in Miri in 2027.

If you have been a member in the past, please renew your membership and join us in our many activities. If you are new to SCAN, join us. Whatever your skills — nursing, teaching, writing, design, organising, or simply listening — there is a place for you in SCAN.

We are stronger together.

Dr Fitri Suraya Mohamad
President
SCAN Kuching
